Raising Our Voices for this Moment

As Passover comes to a close, the story of the Exodus from Egypt, an epic memory of standing up to tyrants and escaping enslavement, remains on our hearts and minds. Jewish tradition includes this story of redemption, of fighting injustice and celebrating freedom in every prayer service when we sing Mi Chamocha. But how do we moderns hold this collective Passover memory alongside the current events we are witnessing? How can we speak out, respond, advocate, and grieve the breakdown of the rule of law, the weaponization of anti-Semitism, and the incarceration of refugees and immigrants taken from their homes without due process?

Temple Shalom is part of a larger collective of Reform synagogues - the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), and our rabbis are members of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) - both of whom have signed on to a powerful and principled statement released by a coalition of Jewish organizations. Their words resonate deeply with our own understanding of both the challenges and the enduring strengths of our community and our nation.  Please read it here
