Ringing out the year and walking the path

This year, the end of the calendar year closely aligns with the conclusion of the book of Genesis in our weekly Torah reading cycle. So many rich narratives and complicated characters of our tradition come out of Genesis. From Simchat Torah until now, we have seen the entire world created from nothing and then destroyed by flood only a few generations later. We have been introduced to our ancestors who, through Torah, teach us valuable lessons year after year about navigating life’s complexities while still walking in partnership with God.
From start to finish, the book of Genesis alone is possibly the greatest story ever told, and it culminates neatly with the hero, Joseph, having risen to a place of wisdom and power and finally reunited with his brothers and family. I can’t think of a better “closing scene” to ring in the new year.
This Shabbat, may we all look back at 2018 with gratitude for the richness of our story, the value of lessons learned and appreciation for our leaders and their desire to walk a path of righteousness and faith.
