with Rabbi Laura Abrasley
For many people, the system that embodies Jewish tradition’s deep concern for how we relate to the environment and our food –keeping kosher – has been reduced to a bizarre set of rules. No wonder it is difficult to understand how ethics connect with what we grow in the ground, how we fill our grocery carts and what is sitting on our plate. Join Rabbi Abrasley as we explore some of key ideas about Jewish food, beginning with the foundational laws of on kashrut, the act of blessing our food and our obligation to care for the earth. Over our course, we will connect these ideas with contemporary secular sources about modern food production, consumption and the values that encourage us to promote equal access to good food for all.
