Staying safe, while being warm and welcoming

This week, I traveled to Baltimore for a day-long security training with the Secure Community Network (SCN). SCN is a non-profit organization founded in 2004 as a central address serving the American Jewish community concerning matters of communal safety, security and all-hazards preparedness and response.
Navigating the ever-changing world of safety and planning is never easy. We must balance the need to keep our members, students and guests safe with our desire to be a place where all can come to pray, celebrate and learn together. As a community, we have made many adjustments in recent months in order to find the right balance.
With each change, our members have reacted with patience and flexibility. Additionally, the security assessment charged this winter has been paid by many families, and that support has allowed us to quickly implement added security measures for everyone. Our community is blessed to have resources within and without, which is so important in times of challenge. Our building is now less open, but our community is just as warm and welcoming as it always was.

Ellie Goldman is Executive Director of Temple Shalom.
