ETGAR 36 is a multiday, multigenerational civil rights journey to the south. Our trip will leave Boston on Thursday March 23, 2023 and return on Sunday, March 26, 2023

What is the itinerary? 

Thursday, March 23:  

  • Travel 
  • Meet with ETGAR 36 staff and review theme of the journey
  • Leo Frank Story

Friday, March 24:

  • Travel to Montomery, AL to visit Rosa Parks Museum - Stand where the Civil Rights movement began and learn about the Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • Memorial for Peace and Justice - Lynching Memorial - Reflect on an often-overlooked tragedy at the first national memorial for victims of lynching
  • Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum - Explore the evolution of racial oppression from slavery to mass incarceration
  • Celebrate Shabbat with Southern Hospitality from a local congregation

Saturday, March 25:

  • Travel to Selma & the Edmund Pettus Bridge - Meet with someone who was beaten on the march. Hear her story. Learn about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and his involvement in the struggle.
  • Travel to Birmingham - Walking Tour of Freedom Park & 16th Street Baptist Church - Tour with a Reverend who was a Civil Rights worker in Birmingham in the 50s and 60s, was arrested and dogs and hoses turned on him. See the historic church where four girls died in a bombing
  • Travel to Atlanta

Sunday, March 26:

  • Attend services at the Ebenezer Baptist Church
  • Tour the King Center and tour of Auburn Street neighborhood
  • Debrief
  • Travel to Boston

The cost of this trip is dependent upon a few different factors including the number of participants, the number of people sharing a room and the cost of flights. Here is the information:

  • If the # of participants = 25-50 people - $995 per person
  • If the # of participants = 20-24 people - $1,130 per person

The cost assumes double occupancy* and  includes all meals (beginning Friday breakfast and ending with Sunday breakfast), all ground transportation, hotels, admission and programming cost. This price does NOT include Sunday lunch or flights. Currently flights from Boston - Atlanta are averaging about $300 round trip. 

*Hotel rates are assuming two people per room. If you'd like a single room, add $275. If three people are sharing a room, deduct $60 per person. If four people are sharing a room, deduct $90 per person.

ETGAR 36 is appropriate for teens and adults. During the last trip our community made, many families with BMitzvah and approaching BMitzvah attended together and found it to be extraordinarily impactful.  Teens fourteen and older may attend this without a parent. Adult members interested in social justice and this part of history are encouraged to attend. 

Next steps?

Click here to save your spot. Registration will be open until January 11th.  As part of the initial registration process, you will be charged $500 per participant. Once registration closes, you will be sent a more extensive registration form asking for your rooming preferences. As you can see from the section on cost above, once we have that information you will be billed appropriately.
