Would you like the opportunity to talk with other people concerned about racism and injustice?  Would you like to better understand these issues and how to deal with them?  Please join one of our Summer Book Groups focused on racial justice.

July Book Groups

For the month of July, we will have groups for two books: Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson and How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. We are offering multiple sessions at different times/days for each book (see below). Each session will meet at the same time for four weeks in July.

Your group leader will set the reading pace and facilitate the group conversation. Be prepared to speak honestly, to listen respectfully, and to be open to diverse points of view.  Together, we will create a non-judgmental and supportive space in which to explore these difficult issues and engage in courageous conversations.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption

Synopsis: Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

How to be an Antiracist

Synopsis: Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. In How to be an Antiracist, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it.
