Hashkiveinu, a prayer included in evening services, asks the Divine for protection and peace. The conclusion is profound, imploring God to “ha’poreis sukkat shalom aleinu – to spread a shelter of peace over us.” This is the prayer that found its way into my heart multiple times this week. The challenging news from the streets of Los Angeles where democracy seems to be unraveling to last night’s reports about Israel’s unprecedented operation against the threat of Iran fill us with considerable concern. At moments like this, when we often struggle to find our spiritual footing in the midst of our fear, when we are uncertain about what to do, prayer can be a thoughtful, grounding first response. While it may not provide answers about our actions or when this fear might subside, it can strengthen us as we summon courage and resilience for the days ahead.
This is the prayer in my heart today. As we enter Shabbat, I hope with all of my soul that these words provide all of us with much needed comfort and bring about the beginning of a world that values peace and prosperity for all of humanity.
Hashkiveinu Adonai Eloheinu l’shalom – We lay our weary heads down tonight in peace with a prayer that You, our Divine Source of Protection, will once again raise all of us up to a new light.
We fill our hearts with the hope that Your Shelter of Peace, will guard us from being overwhelmed by anxiety and fear. We open up to the grace that is Your love, and breathe in the reminder that understanding and connection can once again dwell among all of God’s creation.
Baruch Atah Adonai, ha’poreis sukkat shalom – Blessed are You, the One who spreads a shelter of peace over all of us, over all the world. Shelter us. Protect us. Love us. Amen.
